Cleaning your band after use
When you are storing your bands, they should be stored clean. A damp cloth is all that you need to wipe down the resistance band and free it of dirt. Make sure that the band is dry before storing it. Cleaning products, chlorinated water (swimming pool water) and other chemicals can damage the material in the resistance band. Some clean water is all that you need.
Avoid storing or using in direct sunlight/heat
Never store the band in direct sunlight. Not only will it bleach the color of the band, but it will also contribute to it becoming more brittle. The same is true for heat. If a band is too warm, it becomes brittle, as if it were stored in direct sunlight.
Wear good shoes and check the floor
When doing exercises that require stepping on the band, make sure to wear shoes made with nonabrasive soles. This avoids damage to the band. Also, never use a resistance band with barefeet and do not workout on the floor with an abrasive surface. It could damage it and cause it to snap.
Don’t tie it down for long
Tying off a band creates areas of friction on the band that will weaken it. If any exercise requires you to tie or loop the band around an object(eg. pull up bar), make sure to untie it after the exercise.
Wrapping of a band around an object
It is highly recommended to use Bulmarc’s door anchor since it has a soft foam pad to keep the resistance band safe from tearing. Avoid wrapping the band directly around sharp edges, wood, or chipped edges on the barbell or pull up bars. In case some exercises don’t require a door anchor and need to be attached to a fixed object, wrap a towel around the object or the band whichever works best. Also, rings, watches, bracelets, anklets, etc. can rub on bands, causing damage.
Fading of Resistance Bands
It is normal for resistance bands to fade over time. However a few things can accelerate the fading process – using in sunlight, using the band on corroded objects and treated water and chemicals. To ensure the bands retain their appearance for a long period of time, always avoid the stated reasons.
Overstretching of Resistance Bands
Everything has a breaking point. As a rule of thumb, never extend a band more than twice its resting length since overstretching can create tears and weaken the latex eventually causing it to snap. Also, releasing a band under pressure can cause it to snap back toward the user and cause significant injury. Make sure you have a very tight grip on the handle.
